The story explains that a blood test showing a .14 blood alcohol level would not be admissible after the US Supreme Court ruling on Missouri v McNeely. If admissible, Childress would have faced 15-25 years for aggravated vehicular homicide.

Childress initially lied to the police telling them a drug dealer was driving his car when he crashed into a taxi and killed Geoffriau Powell.
Childress was speeding (60 mph) on Medical Center Parkway. The speed limit is 40 mph. Childress not only had alcohol in his system, but also oxycodone.
Childress had two prior DUI convictions.
